A hydroponic tray is used to grow a plant, and in particular a small vegetable plot, in an enclosed environment. The trays are usually made of clear plastic or some other inert material that will not transfer any flavour to the plants. Typically, they are placed on a shelf with water dripping on the bottom. The water is allowed to trickle through the drain holes that are placed toward the bottom of each of the compartments.

In general, the smaller the size of the hydroponic tray is, the more compact it will be. However, the bigger size of a hydroponic tray will give you more room in the grow room, and can be used as a pot for seedlings.
